Choosing a Webmaster - Part I

When you decide to make your presence felt on the World Wide Web, the first thing is to create a website that can attract traffic. It becomes imperative to select the right person for the job as a wrong choice will bring all your efforts to naught. However, with the presence of many web design and development professionals in the market, it becomes a daunting task to choose the right person if you don’t know how to go about it. It is here that the following checklist can help:

Aim for a long term relationship: It is better to have an eye on the future when you begin you search for the right person to build your site. Remember that even after your site has been created, you will still need a professional to ensure that it’s working without a hitch and fix problems, if any, which may crop up from time to time. So, try to hire someone who is willing to stick with you for a long time and not vanish in the thin air as soon as the job is finished, or worse still, leave you in the middle of the job and express inability to complete the same. So, don’t hurry with your recruitment process. Take your time to find the right one with whom you can have a fruitful, long term relationship.

Check expertise: It always pays to ask questions to understand what your short listed professionals can bring to the table. Just because someone owns the Adobe Creative Suite or Dreamweaver does NOT make them a designer/developer. So, don’t get bogged down by the credential or qualifications. Even the most highly qualified person may not be a good choice if he or she doesn’t understand what you need your website to deliver. So, check the qualifications, work experience and proof of previous work before making your final choice.

Check references: Personal references from friends, family and acquaintances or from your business partners and collaborators can help you find the right person to build your website. Such people can also share how it was working with the chosen person and whether the job was delivered on time and to the specifications specified at the onset of the project.

Analyze previous work: Once you have short listed some persons, check how well they have designed the sites of some of their previous clients. You can even analyze some of these sites to compare your own needs and judge if the same comes up to your expected standards. If it does, you have found your person.

Check the aesthetic quotient: Building a website is not all about coding and programming. You should remember that it will be your human visitors who will be the most precious asset of your online business. So, your site should be visually appealing and easy to navigate or the visitors who land there will soon run away to some other place. In fact, companies all around the world spend thousands of dollars in research and development to find the combination of various colors that consumers are attracted to or to get an insight on effective image placements that help in high conversion rates. This is why it becomes important to choose a person who knows such facts and can design a user friendly site with an attractive outlook.

There are many other factors too, which play an important role in choosing the right person to build your site. We will touch base with some of the most important ones from a wide list in our next post. So, stay glued to this place for some pearls of wisdom that would make your job a cakewalk.
