Facebook Fever
Students, professionals, celebrities and now even owners are big businesses have a Facebook account. Thus, making it “universally cool”! Not too far away from the 500 million users mark, which Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder, has been looking forward too. Consider this, Sprinkles, a cupcake bakery has over 94000 fans of its Facebook page, posts a password on the page everyday, which can be redeemed for a free cake by a certain number of visitors’ everyday.
Cloud computing
It created a large buzz in 2009, and this trend, which enables data and applications to exist on “clouds” or servers elsewhere has caught the fancy of many businesses and individuals alike. With the launch of "Office Web Apps," this movement is set to achieve a new leap forward.
Social Media
Online social media changed the way people communicated, worked and played, and mostly for the better. However, social browsing and news channels, such as, StumbleUpon, Delicious, etc. are no longer popular. Twitter integration and apps were very popular in 2009 and will continue to be in 2010 as well. Consider this, Kogi BBQ, which has several trucks serving Korean food in LA, has over 52,000 followers on Twitter. The service uses Twitter to tell customers where they can find the trucks everyday!
Internet TV and YouTube
Video sharing culture is going strong and YouTube will continue to dominate and we will meet more YouTube celebrities this year. Online video is interactive, memorable, widely accessible, and cheap to create. Businesses are increasingly using video marketing online. 2010 could well be the year the majority of our television starts coming to us through the Internet. Hulu, Boxee, Apple TV and Netflix's Roku box are leading providers.
Google Wave
Still in Beta, Google’s attempt to make communication a seamless stream (a wave) without any breakage will surely be a personal communication and collaboration tool to look out for.
Mobile Payments
According to CNN.com, 2010 will be the breakthrough year of the much-anticipated mobile payments market. While much of Asia has embraced the technology, the U.S., in particular, has lagged. There's reason for optimism in 2010, however: From PayPal to Amazon's mobile payments platform for developers, the big players are seizing the mobile payments opportunity.
Not just mobile payments, a number of small-business marketing services are beginning to use lower-cost mobile marketing solutions, such as, text messaging, mobile e-mail marketing, mobile websites, mobile application development and location-based marketing. With increased adoption of devices like the iPhone and Google Android phone, the demand is ever-growing for mobile applications and web-browsing capabilities and options.
