What is the Purpose of a Grant Proposal?

When a nonprofit organization is seeking a grant to fund a specific project, the basic pre-requisite is to come up with a sound Grant Proposal. The grant proposal serves as an informative document for the prospective sponsors to understand the proposed project. Its goal is to convince the sponsors about the feasibility and relevance of the proposed project, and give reasons why they should fund it.

Objectives of the proposed project
The grant proposal will clearly define the objectives of the proposed project for the sponsors. They can understand what exactly the project is meant to achieve. As far as possible, the objectives are outlined in quantifiable or measurable terms. For instance, how many people or how many schools will receive help under the project, for how long, and in what measure.

Compelling need for the project
The grant proposal presents a compelling case why the proposed project is important. It must reveal there is a serious need or gap in the environment that will be fulfilled by the project. This fact must be substantiated with data and figures as far as possible. The purpose is to convince the sponsor about the usefulness of the project, and its critical relevance in the current situation.

Matching the project with sponsor’s priorities
The grant proposal must be able to demonstrate a clear match between the proposed project and the sponsor’s funding priorities. Most sponsors support a specific area of work, and it is essential to prove that the project goals are consistent with the goals of the sponsor. This is one of the key objectives of a Grant Proposal, in order to ensure the interest of the sponsor in the project.

Foundation for a detailed project plan and strategy
Grant Proposal also serves the purpose as a foundation for a detailed project plan that must follow once the grant is confirmed in principle. The plan may be devised in accordance with the total value of the grant, and any terms or conditions attached with it. Sometimes detailed planning may involve the participation of the sponsors, and their inputs may also be incorporated into the plan.

Based on the plan, the financial and marketing strategies are also defined. Therefore, the grant proposal helps to prepare a clear road map for the nonprofit on how exactly to proceed with the project within the parameters of the plan. With such meticulous planning and strategizing in place, the project’s success is almost assured, as long as the project execution is also performed with equal efficiency.
